Pre-Conference Opportunties

HBCU Institutional Effectiveness Symposium

The Virginia Assessment Group is proud to sponsor the launch of a new professional learning community. The HBCU Institutional Effectiveness Symposium is open to institutional leaders, institutional effectiveness and assessment professionals, and faculty who serve Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions. This event will bring together colleagues to build and share expertise around culturally responsive assessment and learning environments. Read more about this exciting event.

Pre-conference Workshop on Rubric Design

The Virginia Assessment Group is excited to offer a pre-conference workshop this year. This 3-hour professional development workshop will provide participants with an in-depth opportunity to explore and discuss rubrics. Participants will hone and develop their skills in rubric design. This session will be facilitated by experts in rubric design from JMU.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. J. Patrick Biddix

Virginia Assessment Group is pleased to announce that Dr. J. Patrick Biddix will give the keynote address. Dr. Biddix is on the faculty at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he studies co-curricular college outcomes and student learning. We are delighted that he will join us in November.

Dr. J. Patrick Biddix is Professor of Higher Education and Associate Director of the Postsecondary Education Research Center (PERC) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK). His teaching and research expertise areas include research methods and assessment and postsecondary experiences and outcomes. In 2015, he served as a Fulbright Scholar in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Biddix is the author of the 2018 textbook, Research Methods and Applications for Student Affairs and co-authored the 2nd edition Assessment in Student Affairs. He serves on the leadership team for the NASPA Assessment Evaluation and Research (AER) Knowledge Community as well as the Board of Directors for Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL).

Aside from spending time with an active family of five, he hikes, listens to 1990s hip-hop, and plays unnecessarily complicated board games.

Dr. Bethany M. Usher

Virginia Assessment Group is pleased to announce that Dr. Bethany M. Usher, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at George Mason University will give the closing keynote address. 

Dr. Usher works in partnership with students, faculty, staff, academic deans and senior university leaders to develop, direct and evaluate undergraduate academic initiatives and policies. Taking ideas to action is a critical part of her role, and she collaborates across Mason to lead strategic university initiatives and respond to evolving academic issues.

Dr. Usher is also a biological anthropologist at Mason in Fairfax, VA, she studies cemeteries from both osteological and archaeological perspectives to understand the social structure and health of past communities. 

We are delighted that she will join us in November.

Conference Program

Poster Presentation and Reception

The reception is a great opportunity to meet new colleagues and catch up with old ones through some facilitated questions designed to spark discussion. Posters provide an outlet for interactive discussions with conference participants about a project that has been completed or is in the developing stages. The Virginia Assessment Group celebrates 31 years of promoting quality higher education through assessment and institutional effectiveness practices. Read the call for proposals and submit your proposal online by, the extended deadline, Tuesday, August 21st.

Networking Lunch and Dinner Opportunities

The conference includes a lunch and Virginia Assessment Group business meeting on Monday. This is a time for board nominations. Please consider nominating a colleague or yourself if you would like to contribute your expertise to the board. On Monday evening, multiple dinner locations will be identified and participants have the opportunity to socialize and network outside of the formal conference events. (This event is optional and not included in registration).
